Hi,

Following a contact on the Google Earth forums with respect to the F1 simulator I’ve been busy working on a more advanced “Race Simulator” utilising the GE Plugin - and it’s finally in a state where it can be released.

The new Simulator at RaceMyRace takes the Racer-Eye view concept but expands it to cover of a number of different race types - from Running, Bike and Nordic to name a few. We have a few races on there already and are adding new ones as and when we can.

(If you’re a Race Organiser and want your Race added please make contact via the site)

The Racer-Eye view puts you in the position of the selected racer as the race progresses but you can change to an Observer view to see more of course and the other racers present.

Each race has the previous years event with sector times for the winning racers and the next event with a Course Guide to go with. You can also enter your own sector times to include yourself.

You can change focus from one racer to another, speed up a slow down the simulator and jump to any point in the race. The paths are very accurate and have been smoothed so the animation is fluid. They also take into account any 3D models (bridges etc) that are along the course.

Lots to play around with and all the functionality is present to all. (There is a registration that allows all your settings and additional racers to be permanently saved but it isn’t necessary to use the Simulator - although we’d of course love you to sign up).

Here’s a shot from todays Great North Run as we approach the Tyne Bridge.

Hope you like it - it’s taken quite a while to get the engine going - and would welcome any comments. (I’m working on a better Help file but it’s fairly easy to get to grips with)

(Best viewed with FF or IE7+)

Recently a question was raised on the GE boards about how to use a dynamic URL to goto to a specific placemark within a KMZ when you load your GE enabled site.

While there are alternatives to doing that - like giving the user options to click within your site - going to a (changeable) default location on load can be useful.

Here’s an example of how to do it.

http://www.thekmz.co.uk/GEPlugin/examples/pminurl/pminurl.htm

In this I have a KML file with 3 placemarks in it - London, Paris and
Dublin (all of which have a LookAt tag)

If you just open the web page it will load the KML but not set the
view to anything.

If you open the web page by appending one of the cities in the URL it
will load the KML and then fly to the relevant city (using the
aformentioned LookAt). ie
http://www.thekmz.co.uk/GEPlugin/examples/pminurl/pminurl.htm?london

will go to London. (I convert to lowercase so case sensitivity doesn’t
come in to play).

Obviously you’ll need to amend this for your own particular
circumstances but the 2 core parts are:-

1. Parse the URL

For this I use…

var urlquery = location.href.split(”?”);

if(urlquery[1]) {
var urlterms = urlquery[1].split(”,”);
curr_pm = urlterms[0];
}

…so the pm I’m later looking for in my KML (curr_pm) is the first
item after the ?. (It’s set so I can pass more options through but for
this only use the first item in the urlterms array).

2. Find the Placemark

For this I used Roman’s kmldomwalk.js
http://code.google.com/p/earth-api-samples/source/browse/trunk/lib/kmldomwalk.js?r=54
(although you can do it whichever way you want) with which I walk
through the KML until I find a Placemark with the same name as my
curr_pm. When, and if, I find it I extract the LookAt from it and fly
there.

After 29 weeks, 22,200 tacks and 2,460,854 Nm travelled by the 60 completing boats the Race Committee is happy to announce the results for the 2008/09 FPL Global Challenge.

Hearty congratulations to tedbull . You and your crew were consistent throughout the course of the Race and held on despite loosing your focus slightly in the final leg.

A great effort there from my fellow Incredible baganboy . Kept pushing right up to your final tack and gave tedbull a run for his money.

As the highest placed female skipper cherylhoney showed the boys how this is done - nice job indeed - although 6 months on-board a boat with 15 athletic men may well have taken its toll

The Race Committee would like to thank all the skippers taking part - even those who have lost radio contact - and wish you well in your well earned rest - and with 190 run-agrounds and 174 men-overboard there are sure to be some patching up, of both boat and body, to be done.

There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
Ratty, The Wind in the Willows.

hodol kutkut and Getafe King Life battled for the leg win on tack 1 - with hodol kutkut prevailing to pick up the 15 points. Congratulations to baganboy and his crew who have done all they can in their attempt to close in on the race leader.

5 more completed the course on tack 2 and another 6 more by the end of tack 6.

The final 2 boats made it home on tack 8 and 9 with Naked Pirates bringing up the rear but still finishing with time to spare.

Pool B

It was 3rd place in this pool that was being raced for - and what a race it was with 5 boats crossing the line in quick succession on tack 2 - being separated by only 9% on their tack distances - Atlético Tcf just having the edge.

6 more finished by tack 6 with Mid Table Struggler on tack 8 (having run-aground near Selsey on tack 5) and finally The Drog’s Ballacks on tack 12.

Pool C

3rd place again was the highest the remaining boats in this pool could hope for - and again it was very close. 2 boats on tack 1, 5 closely bunched on tack 2 and a further 2 on tack 3.

Then tack 4 and 5 had the last 4 boats cross the line. Great racing there skippers!

Pool D

The close racing wasn’t over as Isaiah Forty:31 lead this pool home on tack 1. Well done to WHATEVER and his crewmen and a well earned 15 points.

Tack 2 and At it again crossed the line in 2nd with 3 boats on tack 3 and a further 6 on tack 4.

Tacks 7, 8 and 9 brought 3 more into port and in the spirit of the event all the crews stayed on the dock to welcome home Tramp Attack who motored in when he became the only boat in the fleet who failed to finish within the alloted time having run-aground on the Isle of Wight on tack 10.

So as the crews attempt to get their land-legs back after many months at sea the Race Committee will put the final standing together and check for any rule violations now the boats can be inspected.

The crew on board hodol kutkut are doing all they can to get the maximum points and hope that race leader A Team of Johnsons, currently in third position, has trouble next week on the run in.

Pool B

Lythgoe’s Disciples strikes Alderney on tack 13 and Vellus Arsefield can feel fortunate they didn’t suffer a similar fate on tack 5 west of Brittany when he threaded himself through some off-shore islands.

Ardley Athletic, the defending title holder and 3rd place holder in the overall standings looks like he may be to far back at this stage to make inroads in the points he needs to catch up.

At the front however LUFC 1963 and Honeyballs were first to be greeted by the crowds who were gathering in Portsmouth by both finishing their Challenge on tack 15. LUFC 1963 were just ahead however and picked up the 15 points.

Congratulations the skipper andybarrell and his crew who can now off to watch their stable-mates at the Riddle Stadium in their Champions League final.

Pool C

An early landfall on the Dorset coast by Darlo Queens on tack 8 - a shame as she was leading at that point

atx1303 however caught the crowds unawares as he finished the leg on tack 12 - 3 tacks ahead of SuperSlaves who seem to have put put the nightmares of the previous leg behind them. Well done to skipper atx1303 who finished this race on a high

Pool D

Just Its Just Not Cricket was another to have some trouble with the Dorset coast - running aground there on tack 8.

By the weeks end Isaiah Forty:31 and At it again are approaching the final waypoint before turning north for home.

One more week to go……………..

Week 4 of Leg 6

With the winners already decided it’s up to the remaining boats to try and make it to La Rochelle before the final week of Leg 6 comes to a close.

Pool A

3 boats still at sea at the end with Lythgoe’s Disciples just short of the line, ooo ahh! some distance out and Kelly’s Heroes having even more problems and running into the Scilly Isles twice and therefore being returned to waypoint 2. An awful leg for SunderlandFan and her crew - the lady really doesn’t want to return to Europe

Pool B

Everyone makes home it except Hoops! who is another boat who had bad luck piled on him in this leg - this week running aground on a tiny island off the French coast near Brest.

Pool C

Again everyone makes it into port except one boat - in this case Crazy Canucks who is another to suffer heavily this leg - running aground again on Belle-Ile en Mer of the west coast of France.

Pool D

3 boats motoring their way home in this pool: Chester Draws, after some trouble getting past the final waypoint, ran aground on tack 11, Bullys Special Prize who began the week back at waypoint 2 and Self Cleaning Ovens who also ran aground on tack 11 while heading for port.

Many in the fleet are probably glad this leg is over but the final 2 week leg from La Rochelle to Portsmouth is just as likely to claim victims on the rocks so the race isn’t yet over for those near the top of the leader board.

Honeyballs (tack 5)
Isaiah Forty:31 (tack 4 and tack 7 - and returned to waypoint 2)
Robots in Disguise (tack 7 and tack 10 - and returned to waypoint 2 - Unlucky there as the 2nd RA was the Scilly Isles which are tricky to hit)

Doomsday and Diminutive Midgets get home on tack 7 … but it’s Doomsday who takes the 15 points by virtue of using less of the tack to cross the line. Well done to skipper Razorback

3 more boats make it to port before the week is done and of those a special mention goes to Naked Pirates who finally seem to be getting their sailing together after only accumulating 6 points up to this point.

Run-Agrounds for:-

grob’s grasshoppers (tack 6)

Sultan of Barnet FC wins this leg on tack 3 - just a tack ahead of Green Peace who takes 2nd. Congratulations go to skipper Blueprint and his crew

After them 5 more boats finsih with a week in hand.

Kazma United picks up the 15 points for crossing the line on tack 5 - with Galatasarky only a short distance behind him. Well done to Lovely Camel for bagging some valuable points

4 more boats reached La Rochelle with a week to spare.

Halfway Up Virginia (tack 9)
Chester Draws (tack 2 and tack 5 - and returned to waypoint 2)
Bullys Special Prize (tack 10 and tack 13 - to be returned to waypoint at the start of GW34)
