The penultimate week of this Leg sees crewmen Lampard and Delap fall over the side of over half the boats in the fleet - far too many to mention individually. This affected virtually all crews as they were involved one way or another in fishing them out of the water - however a handful of boats did make it into Cape Town with a week to spare.
Pool A
Y’all be bad is first to reach the final marker on tack 4. SuperSlaves is not far behind but it’s not until the 11th tack that he passes it. By this time Y’all be bad has made it into Cape Town and claimed the 15 points for the leg win. Congratulations to skipper krispy and his crew
SuperSlaves comes in in 2nd on tack 12 and Crazy Canucks takes 3rd despite the fact that he ended the leg on the rocks of Cape Point.
The rest of the fleet are spread out between waypoints 4 & 5 .
Pool B
Steady progress from Honeyballs sees her reach waypoint 5 on tack 5 and from there it’s an unchallenged run-in to port on tack 7. Well done to skipper CherylHoney and her crew on being the only boat in this pool to finish the leg in the alloted time
In fact none of the other boats even made it to waypoint 5 - the closest being Atlético Tcf who claimed 14 points and Green Peace who picked up 13.
Furthest away, and do far back that they don’t appear on the screenshot, were Chester Draws and Lythgoe’s Disciples who were still short of waypoint 3.
Pool C
The Drogs and LUFC 1963 are neck and neck at the front for the first few tacks of the week and it’s The Drogs who makes it to the final waypoint first on tack 4. But by the end of tack 6 The Drogs finds himself in trouble and only a miracle would help him as he has land all around him. The miracle didn’t come and crewman Lampard took them onto the rocks before jumping overboard at the end of tack 7.
However he still had a big lead over the fleet and restarted on tack 10 but his position was still difficult and rather than learn from his crewmates mistake Delap did exactly the same - hitting the rocks and then jumping over the side
.
This was all LUFC 1963 needed and he took full advantage, and making no similar errors (although he got extremely close to Cape Point), crossed the finish line on tack 13 to claim a leg win and 15 points. Well done to skipper andybarrell and his crew
. Again the only boat to finish in this pool.
The Drogs restarted from waypoint 5 but a last tack lunge by crewman Ameobi onboard hodol kutkut demoted him to 3rd at the close with hodol kutkut taking 2nd by being closer to the finish point.
The rest of the pool were spread out between waypoints 4 and 5 with, in the middle of this fleet, ooo ahh! the only other boat to have any trouble of note when he ran aground on Ile aux Cochons on tack 4.
Pool D
With LukesGiants safely in port their crew were generous enough to wait by the dock to welcome the other boats in - but their wait was in vain as all the remaining boats were still at sea when the claxon sounded.
The closest were Galatasarky and FC Boscoppa who were both past the final waypoint and collected 14 and 13 points respectively. It was close though as they were separated by only 2Nm.
Apart from those 2 the majority of the boats were between waypoints 4 and 5 with the exception of atx1303, who was just short of the 4th marker buoy and Naked Pirates who was off the radar of the screenshot and still 1000Nm short of waypoint 3.
With all the boats struggling on this leg they are sure to be hoping that their crews remain on board and catch fairer winds next week.
