Leg 4 Update - Gameweek 23

With many small Islands in the way of the fleet there is inevitably some work for the repair yards - and a few near misses as the boats move closer to Cape Town. (View in Google Earth to see how close some of those near misses were.)

Tack 3 and SuperSlaves edges ahead of No-Eye Deer, Y’all be bad, Zuluwarriors and Kelly’s Heroes - but is heading for possible trouble as he closes in on the Heard and MacDonald Islands and the French Southern Territories.

Tack 6 and SuperSlaves avoids the Islands mentioned but loses his lead to Y’all be bad who is first to reach waypoint 4. No-Eye Deer is next pass the marker on tack 7 - a tack which Kelly’s Heroes attempts to get back on course following a tack by crewman Ronaldo which took her due south.

But trouble was just around the corner as on tack 9 Kelly’s Heroes hit the rocks of Kerguelen. She was joined there by Its Just Not Cricket on the same tack and by Kazma United on tack 10.

By this time Y’all be bad had increased his lead over SuperSlaves, now in 2nd, and No-eye Deer in third. Crazy Canucks and Zuluwarriors had also now reached waypoint 4.

Tack 11 and ……………….. also falls foul of the same Island group - this time coming in from the south with crewman Defoe at the wheel.

Tack 12 and disaster for Kelly’s Heroes - having restarted from her previous run-aground her crew tried passing Kerguelen to the north but didn’t give themselves enough room for manoeuvre and promptly ran aground again. This meant that their second restart point would be at the last waypoint they passed which was back at waypoint 3. Oh dear :(

By the weeks close Y’all be bad was still out in front and approaching the final waypoint before to turn north to Cape Town. SuperSlaves and No-Eye Deer were around 600Nm behind him while Kelly’s Heroes was a long way back at the rear of the fleet.

Pool B

Green Peace and Honeyballs begin the week in front but by the end of tack 4 Cow Tipping Frogs have overtaken them both. At this point Honeyballs breaks away from the ideal line and heads south on a course that takes her below the Heard and MacDonald Islands.

Green Peace also moves south on tack 6 and Honeyballs finds favourable winds and is first to cross the 4th wayline. At this point things go slightly wrong for Cow Tipping Frogs as Ronaldo takes the wheel and promptly changes direction and takes his boat onto the rocks of Kerguelen.

With Green Peace having a change of heart and heading back north it was now Smoke City who was leading the pack towards the 4th marker.

By the end of tack 10 Green Peace and Atlético Tcf had reached the waypoint with a restarted Cow Tipping Frogs and A Smoked Cheese Pig close behind.

Honeyballs in the meantime had built up a sizeable lead which was reduced slightly by the end of the week with Green Peace running in 2nd, followed by Atlético Tcf and grob’s grasshoppers - who along with the pack behind are not out of danger yet.

Towards the back are Chester Draws and Lythgoe’s Disciples who have alot of ground to make up.

Pool C

Tack 1 and LUFC 1963 is the first the reach waypoint 3 - followed on the next tack by The Drogs.

While the two leaders battle with other as they head for waypoint 4 A Team of Johnsons is next to reach the marker with Robots in Disguise and Time for Trumpton coming up just short at the end of tack 3. Then some very bizarre navigation on board both Robots in Disguise and Time for Trumpton saw them end up going in the completely wrong direction and by the end of tack 6 they were virtually back where they started at the beginning of the week.

Tack 6 also saw The Drogs take the lead and be first to cross the 4th wayline with 2nd place LUFC 1963 loses a bit of ground and not passing it until tack 8.

A Team of Johnsons, having taken a long detour south, nearly makes it on tack 10 - but again he goes off course and is overtaken by ooo ahh!, luckysevens, Halfway Up Virginia, At it again and hodol kutkut who pass the marker on tack 11.

As the week came to a close The Drogs was still at the head with LUFC 1963 about 90Nm behind. A gap then to the bulk of the pool - while Time for Trumpton, following his problems earlier is bringing up the rear.

Pool D

Pool D - Gameweek 23 Pool D - Standings

Tack 1 and LukesGiants passes waypoint 4 while the rest of the pool are still at the previous marker.

atx1303 leads the pack in pursuit and by tack 3 has moved to a course that looks to be taking him nicely between Kerguelen and the Heard and MacDonald Islands - but by tack 5 it had gone wrong and his crew were sitting on dry land while repairs were made after they became yet another boat to hits the rocks of Kerguelen.

FC Boscoppa, Vellus Arsefield and Galatasarky, sharing the same water, are slightly to the north east and after some erratic sailing it’s FC Boscoppa who finally becomes the second boat to reach waypoint 4 at the end of tack 7 - while LukesGiants extends his lead way out in front.

The problems weren’t over for atx1303 however as upon restarting he went straight back onto the rocks. Again this meant his second restart would be from the last waypoint he passed which was waypoint 3. Another case of oh dear :(

Tack 10 and LukesGiants passes the final waypoint but is making the final run in more difficult than it should be being closer to land than he’d like. Crewman Schwarzer however chose the right bearing for his tack leaving Delap the simple task of getting them across the finish line on tack 13. Congratulations the skipper LukedeLuke and his crew for storming to victory in this leg, his 2nd of the Race, and the only boat to finish with a week in hand. Enjoy your time off in Cape Town skipper.

FC Boscoppa and Galatasarky ended the week fighting for 2nd place with Diminutive Midgets in 4th. At the back we find….. Naked Pirates who is still 1500Nm from waypoint 3.

With only one boat from the fleet safely in port virtually all the points are available next week - the final week of this leg.
